We cleaned up the Concord Greenway this season, a first for the LCC, and we were given a special show by Mother Natures own.  The animals came out within the first 5 minutes that we were there; almost as if they intentionally welcomed us.

A fish jumper out of the river to see who we were; then a grey heron glided in to land on the water, looking at all the equipment we came with.  Seeing that we were ok, he took off with those great wings spreading out to catch the wind;   not to be outdone, a mother duck and 7 ducklings swam out into the river;  and finally, a turtle climbed out of the water onto a rock to see us do our thing.  Apparently satisfied, he then jumped back into the river.

To top matters off, we found a supermarket carriage apparently stuck in the mud.   When we couldn’t lift it out, we started digging; and we found that a tree that had sprung up on a little floodplain had hooked its roots between the metal bars of the carriage as if in defiance.   In effect he was saying that he was going to live, even if humans polluted his environment.  It was good to see.
